AES Corporation announced this Thursday it was awarded with the highest honor given by the electric power industry; the US Edison Award, given by the Edison Electric Institute. It is not the first time the company gets an Edison Award; in fact, it is the seventh for AES Corp.
Firstly, Edison Institute awarded AES Corp for its Alamitos Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project; located in Long Beach California.
Secondly, the project became operational in 2020 and made history that year; for being the first stand-alone energy storage project in the US built specifically in lieu of a new natural gas peaking plant.
Thirdly, the BESS project has 100 megawatts of output and 400 MW-hours of storage capacity; in fact, it uses Fluence Advancion 5 technology and is one of the largest battery storage systems in operation in the world today.
Moreover, when fully charged, the Alamitos project supplies power for tens of thousands of American homes in seconds. In fact, the Alamitos not only provides Southern California with reliable power during times of peak demand; but it also has the technology to enable the widespread adoption of renewables; therefore, helping the State of California meet its goal of 100% carbon-free energy by 2045.

In addition, Tom Kuhn, Edison Electric Institute’s president, said. “As EEI member companies continue to advance their clean energy commitments; new technologies such as AES’ energy storage system are positively transforming the electric power industry.”
He also remarked. “AES’ investment enhances the resilience, reliability and security of the energy grid; while also benefiting the customers and the communities they serve every day. I applaud their innovative work and congratulate them for winning this prestigious award.”
On the other hand, as said above, this is the seventh Edison Award in AES corps’ history; making it the most awarded company in the electric industry.
