DTE Energy to launch renewables program for low-income Michigan

DTE Energy

DTE Energy, a Detroit-based diversified energy company, announced this Thursday that the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) approved the company’s plans to bring additional renewable energy to the state; through the launching of a pilot program that will bring benefits to low-income communities.

Firstly, DTE’s plans include the deployment of renewable energy solutions in the cities of Detroit, Highland Park and River Rouge; the aim is to build community solar projects in those cities.

Secondly, these programs will bring direct benefits to a number of low-income residents through the use of 100% renewable energy; in fact, the projects will also provide for credits that would result in lowering customers’ monthly bill.

Thirdly, DTE will fund a portion of such projects, while third parties will provide further investment and assistance. DTE will be in charge to seek those further investments with organizations and other entities.

Moreover, the company will also enhance its popular MIGreenPower program; which enables customers to attribute their electrical usage to designated wind and solar projects; therefore, reducing their carbon footprint without installing their own generation systems.

In addition, the MPSC approval will also lower the program’s cost; the company will simplify the enrollment process, and will include a fixed-price subscription option. Those changes will happen around the first quarter of 2022.

Furthermore, the company will establish a process that will enable customers and private philanthropic organizations to both fund MIGreenPower subscriptions; particularly for low-income customers.

Additionally, If the company is successful in securing the necessary funding, low-income customers who participate in either of these options will receive the bill credits associated with program enrollment without paying the subscription fee.

On the other hand, about the relevance of those programs, Trevor Lauer, president of DTE’s electric company, said. “MIGreenPower program provides our customers with a low-cost option to access clean energy without having to make long-term financial commitments.”

Finally, he remarked. “In addition, the new community solar pilots will help us meet the needs of municipalities and other communities who want more proximity to and involvement with these projects.”
