Dr. Stephen Bushby

As chief nuclear officer, Dr. Stephen Bushby will join AIC Global Holdings Inc, a subsidiary of Portland Holdings Limited. He will lead technical and regulatory initiatives in the clean energy space.

Technical and management positions

Dr. Stephen Bushby holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Western University and has a distinguished career of over 30 years with Atomic Energy Canada Limited (AECL) and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL). He has held several technical and management positions, including:

  • Vice President (Acting), Science and Technology and Commercial Oversight
  • Senior Director of Science and Technology
  • Director of Advanced Reactor Development Program
  • Director of the Generation IV Program in Canada
  • Director of the Reactor Safety Division
  • General Manager, Capital Projects
  • General Manager Isotope Supply Reliability Program

Dr. Bushby also spent 2.5 years with the federal department responsible for nuclear energy in Canada.

Working experience

In his new position as Chief Nuclear Officer, he will liaise with global clean energy companies and agencies to advance Portland’s “Enabling Countries and Industries” framework. Here he will draw on his extensive experience working with industry and governments to develop advanced and small modular reactors (SMRs). This project is in collaboration with international organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO) and the Generation IV International Forum (GIF).

Portland’s investments in life sciences are focused on precision oncology, specifically, companies developing radionuclide-targeted therapies. The company will also benefit from its experience in alpha-targeted treatment. The project will use a cyclotron facility to produce the life-saving isotope Actinium-225.

Commitment to providing Canada and the world with technological innovations

“I am delighted to have Dr. Bushby join our organization. Dr. Bushby’s remarkable professional experience and accomplishments align with our mission to provide countries and industries with a roadmap to achieve their net zero carbon aspirations and address some of humanity’s most unmet needs: climate change and the search for cures for cancer. At Portland, we commit to provide Canada and the world with technological innovations that contribute to global economic growth and more prosperous economies for generations to come,” said Michael Lee-Chin, President and Chairman of Portland Holdings.

“For the world to meet its net zero emissions imperative, non-emitting nuclear power must play a critical and, indeed, growing role as part of the future energy mix. This aspiration is feasible today. Especially with the introduction of small modular reactors. Which, beyond electricity production, they exploited to include district heating and greenhouse gas-free hydrogen production. Beyond just words, Portland is making substantial investments in life-saving energy technologies and therapies. That truly address some of life’s greatest challenges,” said Dr. Bushby.
