Lightsource bp expands to Northern Italy with 400MW partnerships

Lightsource bp announced this Friday it expanded its business opportunities in the regions of Central and Northern Italy. As part of this strategy, the company has signed agreements with two local developers for a total of 400-megawatts of solar energy.

Firstly, the company signed a strategic partnership with Solar IT, an Italian engineering company specialized in the photovoltaic sector. The agreement will lead to the development of 200MWp of photovoltaic projects in Veneto, Piedmont; also, Emilia-Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, and Lombardy.

On the other hand, the second partnership involves the Italian branch of international developer TEP Renewables. It will provide a platform for the co-development of a pipeline of solar projects for a total of 200MW.

In addition, 163MW of these are projects already identified and on their way to development. According to the statement, projects might begin operations around 2023 and 2024. They are located in north-central Italy and on the two major islands.

Furthermore, Lightsource bp and TEP committed to exploring the benefits of coupling storage systems to generation plants. This would improve the flexibility and efficiency of the national electricity grid.

On the other hand, about the region’s appeal to Lightsource bp’s business, Giovanni Mascari, Country Head for Italy at the company, said. “We have worked intensively to develop a solid portfolio of photovoltaic projects in Southern Italy. Now we believe that the time has come to increase our ambitions and expand to the rest of the country, kicking off our activities in Northern Italy.”

He also remarked. “The North offers several opportunities linked above all to a more streamlined authorization process and the possibility of securing PPAs. We intend to seize these opportunities and continue to strengthen relationships with local developers, institutions, and communities.”

Finally, the executive noted that Lightsource bp’s experience in developing land-specific projects will allow them to offer sustainable and affordable solar energy for almost the entire country. “Helping to provide and the necessary impetus to accelerate the decarbonization of the local economy.”
