Kosmos Energy discovers oilfield in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico

Kosmos Energy oilfield

Kosmos Energy, an independent exploration and production oil company, announced this Tuesday the discovery of an oilfield in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico at the Winterfell infrastructure, in which Kosmos works with a 17,5% interest.

Winterfell infrastructure was developed to test sub-salt Upper Miocene prospect located in the Green Canyon Block 944 area, off the coasts of Louisiana and Texas. The well discovered is approximately 26 meters of net oil production, most likely productive in two intervals.

The well is located in deep waters, approximately 1,600 meters deep, and was drilled further 7000 meters. Beacon Offshore Energy will be the operator of the well; while additional interest owners include Red Willow Offshore LLC, Ridgewood Monarch North LLC, CSL Exploration, LP, CL&F Offshore LLC, and Houston Energy.

Kosmos will now work on a development plan for the well, in order for it to enter production. Winterfell well is located nearby to other several existing oil facilities from hosting companies. This will make plausible for companies to start production of the Zora ILX, also in the Gulf of Mexico, later in the year.

Winterfell discover expands Kosmos’ portfolio in the U.S.

“We are pleased to have started the New Year with exploration success at Winterfell validating our proven basin exploration strategy, which is focused on low cost, short cycle, low carbon development solutions,” said in a statement, Andrew G. Inglis, Kosmos Energy’s CEO.

“Winterfell well was funded by a portion of the proceeds from the partial sale of our frontier exploration portfolio. The well in Green Canyon Block 944 de-risks prospectivity in several neighboring blocks held by our company, with approximately 100 million barrels of gross potential within the company’s acreage position,” he concluded.

The discovery positions Kosmos Energy on the U.S. Gulf of Mexico area as one of the top operators; as the discovery was made in the middle of uncertain times for upstream and offshore activity.

Kosmos is a full-cycle deep-water independent oil and gas exploratory and productive company, with key assets in Ghana, Equatorial Guinea and the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. It also operates gas developments in offshore Mauritania and Senegal.
