Vistra launches program that gives free energy at night; 100% solar during days

Vistra

Vistra, the integrated retail electricity and power generation company, is launching a one-of-a-kind program to reduce demand on the Texas grid; particularly during this summer, projected to be hotter and drier when compared to other ones in the past.

Firstly, the project is called TXU Energy Free Nights & Solar Days; as its name stands, the program offers customers free energy during the night, and 100% solar energy during the day; encouraging a shift of energy use to times outside of the state’s typical peak-demand periods.

Secondly, all the energy purchased comes from solar and wind renewable energy credits and solar farms, including the company’s Upton 2 Solar and Energy Storage Facility. The program was launched originally in 2017.

Thirdly, this innovative offering comes from Vistra’s flagship retail electricity brand; TXU Energy, which couples the company’s retail business with its rapidly growing renewable generation portfolio.

Moreover, Vistra already operates a 180-MW solar and energy storage facility in Upton County, Texas; in fact, the company previously announced several new solar projects in the Texas ERCOT market; two of which will come online this year.

Vistra offer program to residential, commercial or industrial customers

In addition, the power for the program comes from zero-carbon solar developments; which altogether total almost 600 megawatts of capacity; in addition to other emission free generation assets, such is Vistra’s Zero portfolio.

Furthermore, to feed its Free Nights & Solar Days program, Vistra utilizes advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) data; which turns customer usage information into greener savings.

Therefore, customers get free electricity all night from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. and solar electricity all day from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., resulting in ~40% free energy usage for the average household.

On the other hand, about the program, Scott Hudson, president of Vistra Retail, said. “TXU Energy Free Nights & Solar Days is a prime example of Vistra’s integrated business model; one that brings renewable products to our retail customers, while turning to our own generation to meet a growing demand for solar.”

Finally, he remarked. “The plan is working to ease the strain on the state’s electric grid during high-demand; afternoon and early evening time periods; and all with 100% renewable energy. Our customers, whether they are residential, commercial or industrial, are looking for renewable solutions, and our integrated model enables us to meet those needs.”
