Mitsubishi Electric acquires Smarter Grid Solutions for DER deployment

Mitsubishi Electric has acquired the U.K-based Distributed Energy Resources (DER) provider Smarter Grid Solutions; the company and its U.S. unit Mitsubishi Power, announced the acquisition this Monday.

Firstly, Distributed Energy Resources are an increasingly looked for solution for grid operators; especially when they are facing an increasingly complex mix of new decentralized power generation and clean energy resources.

In fact, DER solutions enable grid operators to scale controls and solutions to operate integrated capacities in the grid, and a flexible interconnection; also, allows to operate virtual power plants, microgrids, fleet energy asset operations; and also, energy as a service. This portfolio of solutions is precisely the field of experience of Smarter Grid Solutions.

Secondly, the purchase will enable Mitsubishi Electric to expand DER solutions in the European and North American markets; where SGS already had a substantial footprint; but also, all around the world, through the powers of Mitsubishi Electric in Asia, and Mitsubishi Power in the U.S.

Thirdly, about the relevance of the purchase for the Mitsubishi U.S. unit, Brian Heery, President and CEO, said. “We are very excited to bring SGS into Mitsubishi Power. They are committed to the mission of decarbonizing electric power production; and have spent the last decade developing world-class products and processes.”

He also remarked. “We look forward to marrying their products with our suite of grid control products; to help our customers respond to changes and still get the best performance from their electric grids.”

On the other hand, Noriyuki Takazawa, Group President of Energy and Industrial Systems of Mitsubishi Electric, said. “SGS offers innovative solutions; they have helped power utilities in Europe and North America install, manage and optimize renewable energy resources; consequently, we look forward to bring that DER management core competency to new markets around the globe.”

He also remarked. “The SGS solutions align with the Mitsubishi Electric Environmental Sustainability Vision; to realize a decarbonized society by the year 2050 through reduced greenhouse gas emissions.”

Finally, Brent Marshall, CEO of SGS, concluded. “We are thrilled to join Mitsubishi Electric and expand the reach of our energy management enterprise software; to DER customers around the globe; also, in turn, assist those customers to better manage DER assets as they strive to decarbonize their operations.”
