Edenshaw Developments, a Canadian real estate developer, announced Wednesday it is working with Diverso Energy to design a geothermal energy system. Particularly, this solution will be delivered to Alba; a 32-story, 418-unit condo building in the suburbs of Toronto.

Accordingly, this facility will emit 80% less carbon than a similar building heated by natural gas through installation. Moreover, Diverso Energy expects occupancy for 2025.

Geothermal heat pumps – their benefits

Indeed, and it is worth noting, geothermal heat pumps are central heating and cooling systems. Particularly, they take advantage of the earth’s temperature to provide renewable energy that heats and cools buildings.

To provide a quick picture of their advancement, geothermal heat pumps’ installation makes up about 50,000 in the U.S. annually.

However, according to the Department of Energy, high costs have historically constrained the geothermal renewable energy segment.

Nevertheless, that picture is changing. Thus, with alternative ways to pay for upfront expenses, lower maintenance costs, and increasing regulations; geothermal systems, particularly in Canada, can significantly grow.

Accordingly, the Alba will use a closed-loop geothermal system, one of four basic types of ground loop geothermal systems. Similarly, it will have loops of the fluid-filled turbine; which will go into 117 holes drilled 600 feet into limestone shale beneath the site.

Edenshaw Developments and Diverso Energy on their collaboration

In this sense, David Scott, managing director of Edenshaw Developments, commented in a release; “Indeed, Edenshaw has a mission to be environmentally responsible, and we are very concerned about how we build our buildings. Therefore, with Alba, we tried to create as gentle a carbon footprint as possible.”

Scott also noted that the owner of Edenshaw, David McComb, has long expressed an interest in making all developments as sustainable and energy-efficient as possible. Therefore, the company is looking to keep featuring green roofs and electric vehicle charging stations.

On the other hand, Tim Weber, CEO of Diverso Energy, noted that geothermal heating systems are a “good fit” for any multi-residential building with over 150 units.

Moreover, they stand out compared to buildings with conventional heating systems with boilers and cooling towers; indeed, such approaches will need maintenance, services, and replacement in 20 years.

By comparison, a geothermal system can last up to 50 years, according to experts. Besides, it requires very little maintenance if it has proper installation.
