Sempra Energy aims at energy transition through digitalization

Sempra Energy, the San Diego-based energy infrastructure company, released its 2020 sustainability report this Wednesday; on it, the company outlines its broad efforts to decarbonize its operations; achieve energy transition and world class safety.

Firstly, the company intends to capture opportunities in the environmental, social and governance (ESG) realm; in order to create long-term value for shareholders. “We think there is an opportunity to continue making real progress; we are committed to advancing critical new infrastructure investments that support decarbonizing the economies of North America.” Said Jeffrey W. Martin, CEO of Sempra Energy.

Secondly, Sempra outlined four main objectives in its sustainability agenda; which are achieving world-class safety, enabling energy transition, driving resilient operations and championing people; however, it is climate the one objective that it is in the center of its business.

Thirdly, the company, to this intent, has outlined a 3D strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. It’s a triple scope of Decarbonization; Diversification; and also Digitalization that would drive the company to achieve its climate goals.

Moreover, for its decarbonization goal, the company intends to reduce the overall carbon content of its critical economic sectors; the industrial, transportation and power generation. Sempra Energy would achieve this particularly through wind, solar and storage investments.

Sempra Energy aims at net-zero operations by 2050

Furthermore, for its Diversification and Digitalization goals; Sempra intends to expand its carbon capture and storage portfolio; its LNG exports, and also its low to zero carbon fuels solutions. However, for its digitalization goal the company will enhance Smart grids solutions; satellites and drone use.

Therefore, by this integral approach, the company would achieve its target milestones by 2025; and would shape a stable trajectory to become net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. “We are confidence in our ability to innovate and effectively operationalize energy infrastructure; therefore we believe we can be a leader in the energy transition to global carbon-neutrality.” The company highlights in its report.

On the other hand, Lisa Alexander, Chief Sustainability Officer at Sempra Energy, said. “Climate is at the center of our business strategy. That is why we have introduced an action-oriented framework around these three areas; all with a focus on building a stronger and also more growth-oriented busines.”

Finally, she concluded. “We are optimistic about the future; and we are also committed to living our values; doing the right thing, championing people, and shaping the future.”
