Canada and Romania sign MoU to strengthen nuclear energy

Canada and Romania have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen the framework on nuclear energy; the MoU will help Canada and Romania to achieve their net zero emissions commitment by 2050.

Firstly, Annick Goulet, Canada’s Ambassador to Romania; Florin Cîțu, Romania’s Prime Minister; and also, Virgil-Daniel Popescu, Romania’s Minister of Energy signed the MoU this Thursday, with the objective of strengthening cooperation on nuclear energy, including collaboration on CANDU refurbishments and new build projects in Romania.

Secondly, according to the statement by the Canadian government, the MoU will also focus on nuclear energy projects; programs, research and development; and also, policies aimed at sustainable development of civilian nuclear energy.

Thirdly, the areas of cooperation will include CANDU; for the design, engineering, licensing, construction, investment of new nuclear installations; also will include development of small nuclear reactors; the development and production of tritium and tritium related equipment. And finally supply chain integration; including uranium, exchange of goods and services, engineering, maintenance; as well as, manufacturing, and cooperation between nuclear operators.

Canada ‘s nuclear market to grow substantially by 2040

Moreover, the MoU builds on existing relationships between Canada and the European Union; it highlights the long-standing partnership in the nuclear energy sector and upcoming projects in Romania. It also demonstrates the commitment of both countries to advance nuclear energy as it is considered a vital energy source for energy transition.

In addition, the MoU builds on the leadership of Canada on the field; in fact, Canada’s nuclear industry and market will grow at an estimated rate of $150 to $300 billion per year by 2040. Annick Goulet, Canada’s Ambassador to Romania, said about the MoU. “Nuclear cooperation has been a pillar of the 55-year-long Canada–Romania relationship.”

On the other hand, Florin Cîțu, Prime Minister of Romania, said. “To have sustainable economic growth, you need to invest. There is no alternative. The MOU signed today with Canada makes an important statement: clean energy is our common goal.”

Finally, Goulet remarked. “I am proud to have renewed our bilateral commitment by signing this MOU today; and we also look forward to further consolidating our exchanges in all spheres, from security to trade.”
