Last week, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Sempra Energy announced their strategic partnership to target global carbon neutrality; is growing with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU); particularly, to continue advancing clean energy systems. In fact, this collaborative work is also aimed at joining President Biden’s pledge to slash the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030.

Worth noting, NREL’s and Sempra Energy’s cooperative work includes multiyear projects; particularly, ones that will continue exploring explore low-carbon fuels and microgrid technology.

Therefore, as part of the new MOU, both parties will look to foster technical and scientific collaboration. Besides, they’ll look to align their independent commitments to mutual goals.

About the new MOU

Likewise, under the MOU, Sempra Energy and NREL will coordinate and share objectives focused on advancing artificial intelligence to scale solutions across the US; particularly, to enable cities to reach clean energy goals.

Similarly, the partnership will help them to integrate low-carbon fuel solutions; for instance, including hydrogen, renewable natural gas, carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration, and fuel cells. Also, to explore innovative solutions towards 100% renewable energy communities and future-proofing electric grids.

Lastly, the collaboration between both organizations will help them promote viable net-zero solutions that will have widespread community access.

Reception

In this sense, Lisa Alexander, senior vice president of corporate affairs and chief sustainability officer for Sempra Energy, said in a media release; “Our partnership with NREL drives forward a vision to advance the energy systems of the future by focusing on innovation and resiliency.”

Therefore, “new investment and innovative partnerships are critical to developing solutions,” continued Alexander. Particularly, ones “that will manifest a global energy transition while promoting economic growth and prosperity.”

Similarly, Doug Arent, executive director for strategic public–private partnerships at NREL, commented; “Building on our strong history of collaboration, we are excited to accelerate our work with Sempra to advance clean energy solutions.”

Thus, “researching key synergies across power, low-carbon fuels, and industrial sectors are expected to provide critical innovations toward realizing a low-carbon, equitable, affordable, secure, and reliable energy economy,” Arent concluded.

NREL and Sempra Energy long-term partnership

Worth noting, Sempra Energy and NREL have worked closely since 2013. For instance, through Sempra Energy’s subsidiary San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E) and the organization established the nation’s first utility-owned community microgrid in Borrego Springs, California.

Likewise, in 2017, Sempra Energy subsidiary Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) partnered with NREl; particularly, to create, validate, and integrate the nation’s first carbon-free, power-to-gas pilot system. Lastly, in 2019, both organizations joined to dedicate the nation’s first hydrogen-to-methane bioreactor.
